In a surprising turn of events, former U.S. Representative George Santos, who was expelled from his position, has declared his intention to run for Congress once again.

However, this time, he will be standing as an Independent candidate, a departure from his previous affiliation with the Republican Party.

Santos is aiming to unseat the incumbent Republican Representative Nick LaLota, who currently represents New York's 1st Congressional District. In a statement released on Friday, Santos expressed his disillusionment with the Republican Party, accusing it of deceiving its voter base. "The Republican Party continues to lie and swindle its voter base," Santos stated. "I in good conscience cannot affiliate myself with a party that stands for nothing and falls for everything."

Previously, Santos represented New York's 3rd Congressional District as a Republican. However, following his expulsion from Congress, the seat was won by Democrat Tom Suozzi in a special election.

Earlier this month, Santos criticized LaLota, labeling him a RINO - Republican in name only. "He is willing to risk the future of our majority and the future of this country for his own political gain," Santos wrote, announcing his intention to challenge LaLota without specifying his political affiliation.

Santos' expulsion from Congress came in the wake of a damning House Ethics Committee report that found him guilty of misusing campaign funds on luxury items and OnlyFans, among other things. Although he has not been convicted of a crime, Santos has been indicted on multiple counts, including wire fraud, identity theft, falsification of records, and credit card fraud. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Despite his controversial past, Santos made a surprising appearance at Capitol Hill earlier this month to attend President Biden’s State of the Union address. As a former member, he retains certain privileges, including access to the House floor when in session. At the time, he did not dismiss the possibility of running for office again.
