San Francisco resident Daniel Caulch has been sentenced to five years of probation and enrollment in a supervision program following his conviction for the violent stabbing of 94-year-old Chinese and Vietnamese immigrant Anh 'Peng' Taylor in June 2021.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Kay Tsenin emphasized Caulch's final opportunity to avoid state prison, stating, "I am giving you one last chance to stay out of state prison."

As reported by the Daily Mail, Caulch was not sent to state prison but instead placed in an Intensive Supervision Court program designed for high-risk probationers.

Assistant District Attorney Phoebe Maffei expressed dismay at the leniency of the sentence, stating, "[The stabbing] was senseless and horrifying and suggests a quick willingness to harm vulnerable people within our community," advocating for a 12-year prison term for Caulch.

Despite Caulch's criminal history, defense attorney Lisa DewBerry successfully presented a neuropsychology report during the proceedings, revealing underlying trauma and brain injuries that contributed to his actions.

DewBerry shared, "When we were able to get through to him to tell him what he had done, the man cried. He couldn't believe he did such a thing to her."

In response to Caulch's actions, Taylor's family provided an update on her condition, stating, "She is well-recovered and doing fine now." Her daughter Vivianne mentioned, "After the attack, we moved her to an assisted living home."

At the time of the assault, Caulch had been out of jail for only nine days and was under electronic monitoring, as per the New York Post. He faced charges including attempted homicide, battery with serious injury, elder abuse, committing a felony while on bail or release, great bodily injury enhancement, and probation violation.

Caulch had prior convictions for multiple burglary offenses and had served over 100 days in jail. Additionally, he had been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 55-year-old man, although the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
