Peter Navarro, a former aide to ex-President Donald Trump, has lodged an urgent plea with the Supreme Court to remain at liberty while he contests his contempt of Congress conviction.

Navarro's appeal to the highest court in the land comes on the heels of a denial from the United States Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia.

In his legal documents, Navarro contends that his appeal is not a stalling tactic but raises significant legal or factual questions that could lead to a reversal of his conviction or a new trial. He further asserts that he is neither a flight risk nor a threat to society, thus justifying a stay on his sentence.

The filings state, "For the first time in our nation’s history, a senior presidential advisor has been convicted of contempt of Congress after asserting executive privilege over a congressional subpoena." It continues, "Dr. Navarro has appealed and will raise a number of issues on appeal that he contends are likely to result in the reversal of his conviction, or a new trial."

However, the Court of Appeals panel of three judges disagreed with Navarro's assertions. They ruled that Navarro "has not shown that his appeal presents substantial questions of law or fact likely to result in reversal, a new trial, a sentence that does not include a term of imprisonment, or a reduced sentence of imprisonment that is less than the amount of time already served plus the expected duration of the appeal process."

Earlier in March, Navarro was directed to report to the Bureau of Prisons, FCI Miami, by 2:00 PM on March 19, 2024, to commence his sentence. This order followed his conviction for failing to comply with a subpoena issued by the January 6 House Select Committee.

Navarro was handed a four-month prison sentence in January for his non-compliance, which he attributed to executive privilege. He stated to US District Judge Amit Mehta, "When I received that congressional subpoena…I had an honest belief that the privilege had been invoked." His latest appeal to the Supreme Court marks another chapter in this ongoing legal saga.
