A violent altercation on a Brooklyn subway resulted in a 36-year-old man being shot, as confirmed by the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The incident occurred on a Northbound A train around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, involving a heated exchange between the victim and a 32-year-old man.

NYPD's Chief of Transit, Michael M. Kemper, provided details of the incident during a press briefing. He explained that the 36-year-old man had approached the younger man in an "aggressive and provocative" manner. The confrontation escalated when the older man brandished what appeared to be a knife, although he later put the weapon away. However, the argument continued, and the 36-year-old man subsequently produced a firearm from his jacket.

According to Kemper, the older man advanced towards the 32-year-old in a "menacing way," which led to a physical altercation. During the struggle, it is believed that the younger man managed to disarm the older man and fired "multiple shots" at him.

John "Janno" Lieber, Chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), expressed his outrage at the incident. He said, "You know I sometimes say that the subway is a sacred space where we practice the world’s greatest experiment in tolerance and diversity every day so people can live their lives in New York, the greatest city in the world. So when something like this – when you bring a gun on the train and you start a fight, it’s not right. And it’s absolutely outrageous."

The NYPD believes that the two men were not acquainted before the incident. The 32-year-old man is currently "with detectives," while the 36-year-old man is in a local hospital in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unclear whether the 32-year-old man will face charges.
