Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, has expressed strong criticism towards the United Nations for what he perceives as a lack of adequate response to Hamas's terror attacks on October 7.

In a letter addressed to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Katz stated, "If the victims would not have been of Jewish or Israeli descent, your office would have responded in a much more vigorous way," as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Katz condemned Guterres for failing to take a decisive international stance against Hamas's actions, instead choosing to criticize Israel. He urged the U.N. to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization and impose sanctions, similar to measures taken against groups like al Qaeda and ISIS. According to the Times of Israel, Katz asserted, "Your tenure at the UN is set to be remembered for diminishing the organization’s stature to an all-time low, allowing it to become an epicenter of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel incitement."

The Foreign Minister's letter preceded a meeting of the U.N. Security Council to address a recent report documenting instances of sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, during Hamas's attack on Israel. Katz accused Guterres of attempting to postpone the discussion, further fueling tensions between Israel and the U.N. regarding the handling of such atrocities.

Israel has been vocal in its criticism of the U.N.'s response to reports of sexual violence during the attacks, particularly highlighting U.N. Women's initial reluctance to explicitly condemn Hamas. After facing backlash, U.N. Women eventually issued a more direct condemnation of the attacks and the reported rapes committed by the terrorists.
