In a controversial move, Cumberland County District Attorney Jacqueline A. Sartoris, who received funding from billionaire George Soros, has announced a policy shift that will no longer prosecute illegal immigrants for specific traffic offenses in Maine's most populous county.

The policy, which took effect on March 1, has sparked a range of reactions due to its potential impact on illegal immigrants driving in the region.

The policy change, outlined in a memo obtained by The Maine Wire, stipulates that individuals, including illegal immigrants, will no longer be criminally charged for certain traffic offenses. These offenses include driving without a license, driving with a suspended registration, or operating an unregistered vehicle.

Sartoris emphasized the District Attorney's office's commitment to 'problem-solving' and 'focusing on genuine public safety cases,' citing the office's caseload, which is reportedly at 150% capacity. "The focus for us is on problem-solving (making people get legal) and focusing on genuine public safety cases, of which we have plenty," Sartoris stated in the memo. She further invited suggestions for managing the overwhelming caseload, adding, "If you have other thoughts about resolving our 150% caseload, please feel free to share them."

The Maine Wire reported that while the new non-charging policy applies to all drivers in Cumberland County, the traffic violations in question are often linked to individuals who are in the U.S. illegally and thus unable to obtain driver's licenses or vehicle registrations. Consequently, any individual stopped in Cumberland County for driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a license, or driving with a suspended registration will not face criminal charges if that is their only alleged violation.

The memo, as obtained by The Maine Wire, indicates that Sartoris is implementing this change due to the Cumberland County DA's caseload being too high for the taxpayer-funded workers to process efficiently.

According to the Maine Ethics Commission, as reported by Spectrum News, Sartoris's campaign was boosted by a $300,000 donation from Democracy II, a Washington, D.C.-based super PAC funded by George Soros, a billionaire and Democratic political activist.

Critics argue that Soros-backed District Attorneys are part of a national trend aiming to reshape legal enforcement under the banner of social justice.
