San Francisco-based Democrat activist Richard Parina, 78, has been exposed for faking his own death and absconding to Mexico after raising $1.3 million from first responders.

Parina, who falsely claimed to be a retired Army brigadier general and a recipient of three Purple Hearts, was reported dead in January due to injuries from the Persian Gulf War. However, the San Francisco Standard recently disclosed that Parina is alive and residing in Mexico.

In an interaction with the publication, Parina confirmed his existence and pointed fingers at his "adopted nephew" for circulating rumors about his death. "If he just kept his big mouth shut, nobody would have paid any attention," Parina stated. His credibility was further questioned when an email he allegedly sent to an associate earlier this week, claiming he was on his deathbed in San Jose del Cabo, surfaced.

The San Francisco Standard's investigation revealed that Parina's life was a web of fabrications, including claims of receiving 21 military medals, serving in the Vietnam and Iraq wars, earning multiple Purple Hearts and a Silver Star, and being a San Francisco native. Parina confessed to the publication that he had "f*cked up" and "stole valor." He expressed remorse, saying, "And I put it on my hat, and I’m as sorry as I’ve ever been in my whole f*cking life that I did that."

Parina was last seen in public on January 17 at the Mission District bar El Rio during a District 9 supervisorial debate. He announced that he was withdrawing from social media and distributed business cards with his personal contact details. His accounts on X and NextDoor were deleted that evening.

The following day, a post by "Richard Francis," who claimed to be Parina's nephew, announced on X: "My uncle, Brigadier General (ret) Richard Parina died on January 17, 2024, the 33rd Anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, where he commanded the 175th Forward Supply Battalion, attached to the 1st Armored Division. He was awarded his third Purple Heart and second Bronze Star." This announcement led to an outpouring of community support, including from San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey.

Parina's claims of raising $1.3 million for the Catholic Alumni PAC also raised eyebrows. He had previously told a correspondent from The Standard and several associates that he planned to fund moderate political campaigns focusing on public safety. Parina maintained that his fundraising claims were true but confessed to having "no idea" where the funds went. He claimed his health was deteriorating and that he used the funds he had pledged to judge candidate Albert "Chip" Zecher to buy medications.

The Standard also revealed that retired police and fire personnel, former tech executives, and a North Beach restaurateur had all donated to the PAC.
