Authorities are stepping up surveillance efforts in Long Island waters after a series of shark incidents along the New York shores.

In response to recent encounters, the Suffolk County Police Department has announced an increase in shark patrols, utilizing drones for aerial monitoring.

The department urged beachgoers to remain vigilant and report any shark sightings or signs of bait fish attracting predators to lifeguards or local officials.

George Gorman, the state's park director in Long Island, emphasized the heightened vigilance, stating, "We have drones in the sky that watch over the waters. We have lifeguards on WaveRunners that watch over the waters."

A 10-foot-long shark sighting prompted officials to close the water at Robert Moses State Park on Thursday. Data from the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History International Shark Attack File revealed that New York had the second-highest number of unprovoked shark bites in the country last year.

While there were no serious injuries, Gorman expressed concern over the increasing number of cases. Prior to 2022, New York had only recorded twelve unprovoked shark bites.

Governor Kathy Hochul had previously announced the addition of ten drones earlier this year, bringing the total to eighteen.

These drones conduct sweeps three times a day at Jones Beach. Long Island is home to around a dozen species of sharks, including sand sharks, which were spotted by a drone at Robert Moses State Park on July 4.

Scientists note that sand sharks are unlikely to attack humans unless provoked. Some experts suggest that the increase in shark sightings may indicate a healthier ecosystem, with cleaner waters supporting the thriving population of small fish that sharks feed on.

The use of drones for surveillance purposes is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of beachgoers and prevent shark incidents.

With the assistance of these aerial devices, authorities hope to detect and monitor shark activity more effectively.

The addition of drones to the surveillance arsenal is seen as a proactive measure to address the recent surge in shark encounters.

As Governor Hochul continues to prioritize public safety, the use of drones in monitoring Long Island waters is expected to play a crucial role in preventing future incidents.
