A recent case of HIV infection has been linked to a controversial beauty procedure known as a "vampire facial" at a now-closed spa in New Mexico.

The individual, who was diagnosed with HIV, reported that their only potential exposure to the virus was through the vampire facial they received at VIP Spa in Albuquerque in 2018, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The vampire facial involves drawing a person's blood and then reinjecting parts of it into the skin using micro-needling.

However, performing this procedure requires a medical license, which the spa's owner, Maria de Lourdes Ramos de Ruiz, did not possess.

State investigators discovered that Ramos de Ruiz only held a cosmetologist license, which had expired in 2013, as reported by the Albuquerque Journal.

As a result of the investigation, over 100 former clients of VIP Spa were tested for HIV and other infections between 2018 and 2019.

Shockingly, two of the tests came back positive for HIV, and both individuals had received vampire facials. The infected individuals revealed that they had paid $100 for the procedure, according to the Journal.

Following this new HIV case, the health department has reopened its investigation into VIP Spa and has identified additional HIV infections related to services provided at the spa.

However, the exact number of new infections has not been disclosed by health officials.

In light of these developments, the department is urging anyone who received any injection-related procedure, including vampire facials or Botox, at VIP Spa to undergo testing for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Even those who had previously tested negative are advised to be retested.

Dr. Laura Parajon, deputy secretary for the New Mexico Department of Health, emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the situation and encouraging individuals who received any injection-related services at VIP Spa to come forward for free and confidential testing.

In June 2022, Ramos de Ruiz, the owner of the spa, pleaded guilty to five felony counts of practicing medicine without a license.

She was subsequently sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for her actions.
