Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Jill Scott faced severe backlash on social media after altering the lyrics to the National Anthem during her recent performance at Essence Fest.

Scott sang, "Oh, say can you see, by the blood in the streets, that this place doesn't smile on you, colored child. Who's blood built this land, with sweat and their hands. But you'll die in this place, and your memory erased."

She concluded with, "Oh, say can you see, does this truth hold any weight? This is not the land of the free, but the home of the slaves."

Former Republican Congressional candidate Lavern Spicer commented, "A WOKE rendition of the National Anthem where she changed the lyrics to speak about how oppressed Black people are."

Spicer added, "She says 'This is not the land of the free, but the home of the slave…' For reference, Jill Scott's net worth is estimated to be $12 MILLION and is likely much higher. In what way is she oppressed?"

Another user sarcastically remarked, "IRONY — A woman with a net worth of over $12 million dollars is singing to a packed Caesars Superdome about how bad you have it in America.

Jill Scott performed this cringe at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, an exclusively black event that 'celebrates Black artists and Black women.'"

One user even shared a screenshot of Scott's net worth, stating, "Home of the slave, huh."

Another commenter suggested, "She should move anywhere else and see how bad she has it here. I hear Afghanistan is nice."

Critics argued that telling young black people they are victims of oppression they have never experienced, and that doesn't exist today, only provides them with an excuse to fail in life.

"This is nauseating. Not only is the singing awful, but the hateful message is even more repulsive," expressed another user.

Scott's altered rendition of the National Anthem at Essence Fest sparked a heated debate on social media, with many questioning the appropriateness of her lyrics and the validity of her claims about oppression in America.
