The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has come under fire for publishing guidance on its official website that provides advice for trans and non-binary individuals on how to "chestfeed" their infants.

The guidance, found in sections of the CDC's breastfeeding recommendations, offers information for individuals who have undergone gender-reassignment surgeries or are taking hormones to grow breasts on how to feed their newborn children.

However, several doctors have criticized the guidance, not only because it appears to guide biological men on breastfeeding, but also because they argue that the CDC has failed to address the potential risks associated with consuming milk produced by chemicals used in gender-reassignment medical procedures.

The CDC's website includes a section on "Health Equity Considerations" within its "Infant and Young Child Feeding Toolkit," where it states that "Transgender and nonbinary-gendered individuals may give birth and breastfeed or feed at the chest (chestfeed)."

The CDC also acknowledges that the gender identity or expression of transgender individuals differs from their sex assigned at birth and that the gender identity of nonbinary individuals does not fit neatly into traditional categories of man or woman.

Under the section on "Breastfeeding," specifically addressing breastfeeding for individuals who have undergone breast surgery, the CDC introduces the term "chestfeeding." The CDC poses the question, "Can transgender parents who have had breast surgery breastfeed or chestfeed their infants?" and responds with a "yes," followed by an explanation.

The CDC website states, "Some transgender parents who have had breast/top surgery may wish to breastfeed, or chestfeed (a term used by some transgender and non-binary parents), their infants.

Healthcare providers working with these families should be familiar with medical, emotional, and social aspects of gender transitions to provide optimal family-centered care and meet the nutritional needs of the infant."

The post also mentions that these transgender parents may require assistance with maximizing milk production, supplementing with pasteurized donor human milk or formula, medication to induce lactation or avoid medications that inhibit lactation, and finding appropriate lactation management support, peer support, and emotional support.

According to the Daily Mail, this guidance may apply to biological men who can produce their own breast milk by taking hormone drugs that mimic the changes that occur in a biological woman's body during late-stage pregnancy.

However, the outlet notes that the FDA has issued a warning that one of these drugs, domperidone, "can pass into breast milk in small amounts and can sometimes give babies an irregular heartbeat as a result."

The Daily Mail interviewed multiple doctors who criticized the CDC for not addressing the potential health risks to infants who are "chestfed" by biological men undergoing hormone therapy.

Dr. Jane Orient, the executive director of the conservative Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, stated, "The CDC has a responsibility to talk about the health risks, but they have been derelict in doing that."

She also expressed concerns about the long-term effects on children when trans parents use "off-label hormones" for purposes other than their intended use.

Dr. Stuart Fischer, an internal medicine physician based in New York, commented that it is "very hard to believe" that breast milk naturally produced by a biological female is the same as breast milk induced in a biological male.

He also raised questions about the potential effects of this form of breast milk on infants, asking, "If it's been tested a handful of times, how would we know the long-range effect? The short-term is one thing, but the long-term in terms of physical and mental illness..."

The CDC has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.

While the CDC supports the idea of transgender parents breastfeeding or chestfeeding their infants, concerns have been raised about the potential long-term effects on children and the lack of information regarding the health risks involved.
