Roger Anderson, founder of the Jolly Roger Telephone Company, has developed an artificial intelligence call-deflection system to combat the growing problem of robocalls and telephone fraud.

Anderson's motivation for creating this system stems from an incident nearly 10 years ago when a telemarketer swore at his son. Since then, he has been determined to cause as many problems as possible for robocallers and scammers.

Unwanted robocalls have become the top complaint to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), with Americans receiving approximately 4 billion robocalls per month.

In addition, research from caller-ID company Truecaller revealed that phone scams in America resulted in nearly $40 billion in losses from May 2021 to May 2022.

Anderson's solution involves using ChatGPT-powered personalities to engage with spam callers. These AI chatbots engage fraudsters in circular conversations, preventing them from extracting financial information.

Anderson acknowledges that his approach may seem silly, but he believes it is necessary because traditional methods have failed to stop the onslaught of unwanted calls.

The AI chatbots are programmed to adapt their conversations to the context of the call. For example, if a scammer mentions debt consolidation, the chatbot will discuss its own debt and tease the scammer.

Similarly, if the scammer brings up Medicare fraud, the chatbot will engage in a conversation about Medicare to keep the scammer occupied.

According to Anderson, there have been over 28 billion robocalls in the United States so far this year, with a quarter of them being scams. He explains that one scam operator using auto-dial and voice technology can make hundreds of calls per minute in search of victims.

To counter this, Anderson has created AI-generated voices, such as an old man with memory loss named Whitey Whitebeard, to act as enticing victims and disrupt the fraudsters' operations.

The AI chatbots, including characters like Salty Sally and Whiskey Jack, use the same tools as the robocallers but intercept the calls and keep the scammers engaged, preventing them from contacting other potential victims down the line.

Anderson believes that by preventing robocall scams, people's trust in answering their phones can be restored, and Americans can save significant amounts of money.

The FCC estimated that reducing fraud and nuisance from illegal robocalls could save Americans over $13.5 billion annually. Anderson hopes that his AI tool will provide a sense of revenge and protection for everyone affected by robocalls.
