Two individuals were reportedly attacked by sharks off the coast of New York on the Fourth of July, according to authorities.

The victims, both men in their 40s, were attacked in separate incidents. The first attack occurred in Quogue Village, where the victim, a 47-year-old man, was bitten while in chest-deep water.

He sustained severe lacerations on his right knee, but did not see the shark responsible for the attack. Police, however, believe it was a "larger marine animal," as reported by the Daily Voice.

Less than an hour later, a 49-year-old man was bitten on the hand off the coast of Fire Island Pines, according to News 12 Long Island. Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries.

Experts suggest that the increase in shark sightings along the coast may be attributed to the presence of bunker fish and rising ocean temperatures. George Gorman, regional director with New York State Parks, stated, "This is our new normal. We're going to be monitoring, we're going to be watching over."

These incidents were not isolated, as another shark attack occurred on Monday. A 15-year-old surfer was bitten on his heel and toes while surfing off of Fire Island. Fortunately, his injuries were non-life-threatening.

As the frequency of shark-related incidents continues to rise, authorities and experts are emphasizing the importance of vigilance and caution when swimming in coastal waters.
