The US Navy announced on Wednesday that it had successfully thwarted an attempt by Iran to seize two commercial oil tanker ships in the Gulf of Oman.

According to a statement from US Naval Forces Central Command, Iranian ships approached a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel at around 1 a.m. local time. However, they quickly retreated when the guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul arrived on the scene.

Just a few hours later, a distress call was received from a Bahamian-flagged oil tanker, reporting that another Iranian vessel was approaching and demanding it to stop.

The Iranian ship fired shots at the tanker using small arms and crew-served weapons, but once again fled when the USS McFaul intervened.

Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, expressed his pride in the efforts of the McFaul crew, stating, "I couldn't be prouder of the entire [U.S. Naval Forces Central Command] team, especially the exceptional effort by the McFaul crew."

It is important to note that the incident occurred in international waters between Iran and Oman. No US personnel were injured during the encounter, and the US Navy did not engage in any direct confrontation with the Iranian vessels.

The US military has reported that Iran has harassed or seized nearly 20 internationally flagged merchant vessels since the beginning of 2021. These actions by Iran have been deemed a clear threat to regional maritime security and the global economy.

In response to the escalating tensions, the US has increased the frequency of ship and aircraft patrols in the Strait of Hormuz.

This strategic waterway connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean, making it a vital choke point for maritime traffic. The US is committed to ensuring the safety and security of this crucial passage.
