The homeless crisis in Los Angeles continues to worsen, with a recent report revealing a significant increase in the number of people living on the streets.

According to the 2023 Greater Los Angeles homeless count results conducted by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), both the city and county have seen a rise in homelessness.

Los Angeles County's homeless population has surged to approximately 75,518, a ten percent increase from the previous year's count of 69,144.

In the City of Angels, the number of homeless individuals has risen to approximately 46,260, a nine percent increase from 2022's count of 41,980.

These alarming figures highlight the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for action. Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum, the chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, expressed her concern, stating, "The homeless count results tell us what we already know, that we have a crisis on our streets, and it's getting worse."

The results of the count have been met with disappointment and frustration from local officials. Janice Hahn, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, described the numbers as "disappointing" and emphasized the need for more cities to step up and support solutions.

Hahn stated, "It is frustrating to have more people fall into homelessness even as we are investing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and resources into efforts to bring people inside."

The accuracy of previous homeless counts has been called into question, leading to changes in the counting process. Los Angeles officials challenged the 2022 LAHSA count, which reported zero homeless people in Venice Beach, an area notorious for its significant homeless population.

In response, the county implemented a new counting app and hired a demographer and two data scientists to ensure more accurate results.

While some progress has been made in addressing homelessness, the scale of the problem remains overwhelming. Democratic Mayor Karen Bass claims that her administration has moved at least 14,000 homeless individuals into interim or permanent housing.

However, it was revealed earlier this year that the city is spending over $800,000 per housing unit, raising concerns about the cost-effectiveness of these efforts.

It is important to note that Los Angeles is not the only major city experiencing a surge in homelessness. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority highlighted that Chicago saw a 57 percent increase in its homeless population, while Portland experienced a 20 percent hike.

Additionally, several counties in California, including Kern County, San Bernardino County, San Diego County, and Riverside County, have also seen significant increases in homelessness.

In response to the growing crisis, some cities have taken steps to address the issue. San Diego and Portland recently approved homeless camping bans, signaling a recognition of the need for alternative solutions.

As the homeless crisis continues to escalate, it is clear that urgent action is required to provide support and resources to those in need.
