Ben and Jerry's faced significant backlash on Twitter after their Independence Day message called for the US to return land to indigenous people.

The tweet, which linked to the ice cream company's website, stated, "This 4th of July, it's high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it. Learn more and take action now."

The company specifically suggested that the US should start by giving back Mount Rushmore in South Dakota's Black Hills. However, critics pointed out that Ben and Jerry's did not mention returning land in their home state of Vermont, where the Algonquin-speaking Abenaki lived as part of the Wabanaki Confederacy.

These indigenous people's myths and legends were collected by white anthropologists in the 1800s, preserving their cultural heritage.

Critics also questioned whether Ben and Jerry's would be willing to give up their own land, as they focused on South Dakota for the initial give-back. Additionally, they highlighted that there are hardly any Abenaki left in Vermont to whom the land could be returned.

Ben and Jerry's further claimed that the US government had broken treaties with the Great Sioux Nation, a collective term for the tribes in the area.

They emphasized the importance of the Indigenous-led Land Back movement, which aims to restore the rights and freedoms of indigenous people and dismantle white supremacy and systems of oppression.

However, Twitter users were quick to express their disapproval. Many dismissed the company's message as "stupid and pandering nonsense."

Others sarcastically pointed out that Ben and Jerry's uses milk from cows to make their ice cream, suggesting hypocrisy in their stance. Some users even called for the company to donate all of their profits to indigenous people.

The controversy surrounding Mount Rushmore extended beyond Ben and Jerry's. Target, a major retailer, was criticized for funding a group that referred to the monument as "an international symbol of white supremacy."

The Biden administration canceled the fireworks display at Mount Rushmore, citing concerns about its impact on local tribes. Former President Trump had reinstated the display during his time in office.

The Democratic Party also weighed in on the issue, accusing Trump of disrespecting Native communities and glorifying white supremacy. However, the tweet was later deleted.

The Biden administration's Park Service claimed that fireworks were viewed as an adverse effect on the traditional cultural landscape by multiple tribes.

Critics of Ben and Jerry's and other woke activists argue that they prioritize respecting and valuing every culture except their own. They believe that these individuals fail to acknowledge the contributions of their own culture, which has protected their natural rights and enabled their way of life and corporate entrepreneurship.

Despite the company's popularity for its delicious ice cream flavors, many question the credibility of citizens who harbor self-hatred and disdain for their own country.
