The extent of damage and vandalism caused by nearly a week of nightly riots in France has been revealed in a summary of recorded burnings, with thousands of vehicles and buildings affected.

According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, there have been 5,662 vehicle fires and at least 1,000 damaged buildings during the six nights of riots triggered by the shooting death of an Algerian heritage teenager by a police officer in a Paris suburb.

The destruction of vehicles includes private cars, trucks, buses, and trams, with one incident involving looters stealing a large truck to gain access to a mall. On Thursday night alone, there were 1,919 vehicle fires.

The attacks on public transport have had consequences for less affluent communities who rely on it, as highlighted by the grandmother of the slain teen, who appealed for an end to the violence.

Public transport has been shut down every night to protect riders and staff and to limit the mobility of young people during the defacto curfew.

At least 254 police stations, as well as town halls, schools, post offices, and private commercial properties, have been targeted for burning or looting. The government initially responded slowly to the violence but eventually increased the police deployment from 7,000 officers to 45,000 a night.

So far, there have been 2,354 arrests, with an average age of 17 years old and 60% having no prior criminal record.

722 police officers have been injured, but the number of seriously injured is relatively low. One firefighter is reported to have died over the weekend, although authorities have not officially linked the fatality to the riots.

The firefighter, who was 24 years old, died of a heart attack while attempting to put out a car fire in an underground parking lot.
