Newly unsealed court documents in the Delphi murders case have shed light on how Indiana investigators connected a local CVS employee, Richard Allen, to the 2017 crime and provided insight into the possible cause of death for the two teenage victims.

According to the documents, investigators believe that Allen used a "sharp object" to kill Liberty "Libby" German, 14, and Abigail Williams, 13, on February 14, 2017, while the girls were walking on a popular hiking trail in Delphi. Allen had initially come under suspicion after witnesses and security footage linked him and his vehicle to the crime scene.

During questioning, Allen admitted to being on the Monon High Bridge Trail on the day the girls were reported missing, February 13. The girls' family members had dropped them off at the trail around 1:50 p.m., and when they couldn't reach or locate the girls later on, they reported them missing. Less than 24 hours later, the girls' bodies were discovered in a wooded area on February 14.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, investigators noticed that a pair of underwear and a sock were missing. They also found a phone under Libby's body, which contained a 43-second video. The video showed Abigail walking on the Monon High Bridge towards Libby, with a man wearing a dark jacket and jeans following closely behind. The man can be heard ordering the girls "down the hill," according to the affidavit.

The video was captured at 2:13 p.m., less than 25 minutes after the girls were dropped off at the trail. Four other girls who had been walking on the bridge that afternoon confirmed seeing a man matching the description of the individual in the video.

Based on their investigation, authorities believe that a firearm and a knife were used in the abduction and murder of Abigail and Liberty. An unspent .40-caliber round was found between the girls' bodies, suggesting the involvement of a firearm. Additionally, a medical examiner determined that the girls died from wounds caused by a "sharp object."

Five years later, in October 2022, investigators interviewed Allen and his wife, Kathy Allen. During the interview, Allen confirmed that he had been wearing blue jeans, a blue or black Carhart jacket with a hood, and a head covering on the day he was on the trail. The description of Allen's clothing and the items recovered from his home matched the description of the man seen in the video taken by Liberty German's phone.

Following the interview, investigators executed a search warrant at the Allens' home in Delphi. They discovered a blue Carhartt jacket, a SIG Sauer P226 .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun, and a .40-caliber S&W cartridge in a wooden keepsake box in Allen's bedroom. The handgun recovered from Allen's home was consistent with the .40-caliber unspent bullet found at the murder site in 2017.

Based on these findings, investigators determined that Allen was the last person to have contact with Abigail and Libby. In October 2022, after recovering items from his home, Allen was taken into custody for the murders of the two girls.

The release of approximately 100 documents in Allen's case was made possible after journalist Áine Cain and attorney Kevin Greenlee, who co-host "The Murder Sheet" podcast and have closely followed the Delphi murders case, petitioned the court for their release.
