Republican House committee chairmen are demanding that the Justice Department allow officials to testify to Congress about an alleged cover-up in the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden.

The invite list prominently features Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss.

Two IRS whistleblowers claimed in sworn depositions last month that the investigation into President Biden's son was hindered by preferential treatment and the refusal of Biden-appointed U.S. attorneys in Southern California and Washington, DC, to bring recommended charges for failure to pay taxes on foreign income.

Oversight Chairman James Comer, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, and Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith have signed the demands for closed-door testimony. They wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting the first-hand testimony from these individuals to fully assess the serious allegations raised by the IRS whistleblowers.

The committees are seeking to schedule transcribed interviews as soon as possible, with the possibility of resorting to compulsory process if necessary.

The whistleblower testimony revealed that Weiss's ability to bring charges outside of Delaware was misrepresented by Garland to Congress. However, Garland is not initially included in the interview requests. The committees may seek testimony from lower-ranking officials before potentially moving to impeach Garland, according to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Weiss recently announced that Hunter Biden would plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax crimes in Delaware, as well as a gun possession felony that will be expunged after two years of probation. Republicans criticized the plea deal as a sweetheart deal.

IRS supervisory agent Gary Shapley stated that Weiss was prevented from bringing charges by DC and Los Angeles U.S. attorneys Matthew Graves and Martin Estrada. Both Graves and Estrada are on the list of officials invited to testify, along with Delaware Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf, who played a significant role in the Hunter Biden case, according to the whistleblowers.

Shapley, who oversaw the Hunter Biden tax fraud case for over three years, revealed that the most serious charged offenses avoided criminal penalties or reimbursement to the government due to a statute of limitations on 2014 and 2015 income. Another IRS case agent who worked on the Hunter Biden case since 2018 supported Shapley's testimony in a subsequent deposition before the Ways and Means Committee.

The list of requested interviewees includes FBI officials Tom Sobocinski and Ryeshia Holly, as well as five other DOJ officials. Similar letters were also sent to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel to corroborate the testimony from Shapley and his subordinate, who remains anonymous.

The letter to the IRS requests testimony from tax-agency employees Michael Batdorf and Darrell Waldon, who supervised Shapley. The Secret Service request asks the agency to identify and make available for interviews agents who were aware of an alleged tipoff to the Biden transition team on December 7, 2020. The tipoff reportedly informed the team that the IRS intended to approach Hunter Biden for an interview, allowing him to evade investigators.
