On Sunday, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy hinted at a possible impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Merrick Garland following explosive testimony from an IRS whistleblower.

The whistleblower, Gary Shapley, told Congress that President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden had threatened a Chinese business associate in his father’s presence. Shapley claimed the alleged text message exchange was discovered during an investigation into Hunter’s foreign business dealings in 2018. Hunter has denied that his father knew anything about his business dealings.

McCarthy took to Twitter to call for answers from U.S. Attorney David Weiss, stating, "we need to get to the facts, and that includes reconciling these clear disparities.” He said that if the whistleblower’s allegations were true, they would be a significant part of a more extensive impeachment inquiry into Garland’s alleged weaponization of the Department of Justice.

The text message reportedly reads: “I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me, and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.”

The White House has denied the allegations, stating that “the President was not in business with his son.” The situation is still developing, and it remains to be seen whether an impeachment inquiry into Garland will be launched.
