A 20-year-old mother from Cleveland, Ohio, Kristel Calendario, has been charged with the murder of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn.

Calendario was arrested on June 18 after allegedly leaving her daughter unattended for eight days while she went on vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit. Upon her return, she found her daughter dead, with no food or water. Jailyn's playpen was covered in filthy blankets and a bottom liner saturated with urine and feces. Calendario has been charged with murder and is currently held in the Cuyahoga County Jail on a $1 million bond. Her court date is scheduled for June 28 at 8:30 a.m.

According to court documents, Calendario told investigators that she left her daughter "at home, all alone and unattended" while she was away. Jailyn was found "unresponsive" and "extremely dehydrated" when she was later discovered. The case has shocked the community, with neighbors expressing their heartbreak over the tragedy. One neighbor, a mother and daughter who had previously watched Jailyn, said, "We were absolutely heartbroken, we loved Jailyn a lot."

The neighbors had been assigned to watch Jailyn before, and last August was the first time they met Jailyn and her mother. Calendario had told them she would be gone for a few days but was back after a month and a half. The mother called Calendario when she was gone, saying, "I need milk. I need money. I don't have money to buy milk for your baby." However, this time, Calendario left Jailyn all alone.
