A federal judge has overturned Florida's ban on Medicaid coverage for sex-change treatments, which Republican Governor Ron DeSantis previously implemented.

The ruling was made by Robert Hinkle, a U.S. District Judge appointed by former President Bill Clinton. Hinkle stated that the ban violated equal protection rights guaranteed by the Constitution and called it "purposeful discrimination." He further added that the ban was instituted by DeSantis and the Republican-controlled legislature "for political reasons."

Hinkle's ruling stated that "pushing individuals away from their transgender identity is not a legitimate state interest." He also noted that some believe that cisgender individuals should adhere to their natal sex, while transgender individuals have inappropriately chosen contrary gender identity. However, he stated that this view is wrong.

It is worth noting that in many developed countries, including several Scandinavian countries, sex change interventions for minors are seen as lacking evidence and as largely experimental treatments. Moreover, pioneers in gender dysphoria treatment have come out against modern philosophies that immediately emphasize "affirming" gender-confused minors. At the same time, experts have repeatedly poked holes in much of the scholarship, claiming child sex changes are medically necessary.

This ruling comes after another decision made by Hinkle two weeks ago, where he temporarily overturned a new Florida law that prevented three minors from receiving puberty blockers and hormone treatment after their parents sued the state on the children's behalf.

Governor DeSantis had signed a new law banning sex change treatment for minors. At the bill signing in May, DeSantis said, "This will permanently outlaw the mutilation of minors. They're trying to do sex change operations on minors, giving them puberty blockers and doing things that are irreversible to them."

DeSantis had also signed two other bills on the issue – one requiring people to use public restrooms based on their biological sex and the other to prevent children from attending drag shows or other adult events.
