Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has defended the city's sanctuary city status, stating that it is necessary to protect immigrants and prevent the Los Angeles Police Department from doing the work of ICE.

Speaking on NPR's "All Things Considered," Bass acknowledged that being a sanctuary city will require spending city resources on migrants. However, she also stated that the city could not handle any more buses of migrants sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott or any other Republican officials. According to Bass, the city is in a crisis where it cannot provide housing for Angelenos, and more buses would exacerbate that crisis.

Bass expressed surprise that Los Angeles had not officially codified its sanctuary city status, as she believed it had been a sanctuary city for years. She emphasized that undocumented immigrants are vulnerable and that compromising their safety would compromise the security of all Angelenos.

When asked if being a sanctuary city means that Los Angeles is prepared to spend city resources, property, and personnel to help migrants find shelter and services, Bass responded in the affirmative. She stated that Los Angeles is a city of immigrants, with people from over 100 countries, and the city wants to ensure everyone is protected. However, she also noted that the city has 40,000 unhoused people and cannot provide housing for Angelenos.

Bass criticized Republican officials, including Gov. Abbott, for sending buses of migrants to Los Angeles, calling it a reflection of their xenophobia and anti-immigrant ideology. She accused Republicans of planning to run on an anti-immigrant platform in the 2024 election.

When asked if Los Angeles is in a position to absorb more busloads of migrants, Bass responded in the negative. She stated that if what happened to New York occurred in Los Angeles, it would exacerbate the city's current crisis.
