Two men have tragically lost their lives, while three others were injured in a horrific mass shooting at a Father's Day celebration at Wendell Smith Park in the Roseland area of Chicago, Illinois.

The incident, which struck at the heart of this annual family event near West 99th Street and South Princeton Avenue, unfolded around 8 p.m. The victims range in age from 19 to 37.

According to Chicago police, an assailant indiscriminately opened fire from a gray Honda sedan, killing two men, aged 33 and 37, and wounding three others, aged 19, 25, and 27. A woman, who wished to remain unidentified, recounted her terrifying ordeal to ABC7. She was at the park with her family when they heard a barrage of gunfire, forcing them to seek immediate cover. Residents claim that around 100 rounds were fired, causing panic and mayhem.

Both deceased victims suffered fatal gunshot wounds: the 37-year-old was shot in the head, and the 33-year-old was hit in the neck. The three injured victims were swiftly transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and Roseland and Christ hospitals. While two victims are reportedly in fair condition, the third, a 27-year-old male shot in the buttocks and shoulder, remains in critical condition.

Commander Tyrone Pendarvis of the Chicago Police Department, addressing the media at the scene, lamented the tragedy that marred the otherwise peaceful day. "It's unfortunate today, that this occurred, because it was a fine day— people just enjoying their family activity. But violence prevailed in this city and it's unfortunate that five individuals were shot," Pendarvis said in a statement later shared on Twitter by reporter Jake Sheridan.
