Vice President Kamala Harris has faced criticism on social media for advocating for an "assault weapons ban" as the Biden administration continues to push for more gun control.

Harris tweeted, "Weapons of war have no place on the streets of a civil society. Congress must pass an assault weapons ban. President Biden will sign it."

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky responded by accusing Harris of wanting government agencies to possess those firearms but not the American public. He tweeted, "Your bodyguards, and dozens of 'civil' agencies like the USDA, the U.S. Dept. of Ed., and the EPA possess the firearms you are calling weapons of war. The reality is you want every citizen disarmed and every government agency armed with these guns."

Other critics also pushed back against Harris' gun control advocacy. Steve Cortes tweeted, "How about we do an inventory of the weapons your protection team carries? Why would they be entitled to such firearms, but not regular citizens?" Conservative radio host and Second Amendment advocate Dana Loesch declared, "This republic was founded by free people using weapons of war. They literally made this society. You'll ban nothing and Biden will sign nothing."

Attorney Kostas Moros wrote, "A civil society needs 'weapons of war' because tyrants have historically made societies quite uncivil."

On Thursday, President Joe Biden also promoted gun control on social media, tweeting, "At a time when guns are the number one killer of kids in America, it shouldn't be this hard to convince Republicans in Congress to keep weapons of war off our streets and to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people."

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
