The move is part of a campaign by Republican governors to draw attention to the plight of border states as the immigration crisis worsens under the Biden administration's lax policies. Abbott tweeted on Wednesday that "the first bus of migrants from Texas has arrived in Los Angeles. Our overwhelmed border towns are on the frontlines of President Biden's border crisis & need relief."
Abbott also stated that Texas would continue to bus migrants to sanctuary cities like LA until the President secures the border. The migrants arrived at the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, according to KCAL-TV. Abbott's statement attached to the tweet said that more than 21,000 migrants had been sent to sanctuary cities from Texas under the program approved by him.

Abbott's move comes after the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to approve an order instituting the city as a sanctuary city and forbidding city employees from working with immigration officials. Governor Abbott said that Los Angeles is a significant city that migrants seek to visit, particularly now that its city leaders have approved its self-declared sanctuary city status. He added that Texas would continue providing this much-needed relief until President Biden steps up to do his job and secures the border.

The California state government declared the state a "sanctuary state" in 2017. However, when Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent migrants to Sacramento, the state's capital, Democratic California Governor, Gavin Newsom called him a "small, pathetic man." He implied that the governor was guilty of kidnapping. Republican governors have been sending migrants to sanctuary cities to bring attention to the crisis at the border.
