Riley Gaines, a former NCAA standout swimmer at Kentucky and current advisor for Independent Women's Voice, has expressed her disagreement with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre's response regarding transgender participation in women's sports.

Jean-Pierre was asked about the safety of girls competing against transgender girls in high school sports. She dismissed the question as "dangerous" and pushed back on the "broad" example given. Gaines took to Twitter to express her concern, stating that the message being sent is that women's safety, privacy, fairness, equal opportunities, and dignity do not matter. She added that the "misogyny is slapping us across the face."

Gaines has been at the forefront of the movement to exclude transgender girls and women from girls and women's sports in the name of fairness and equality. Last month, she was present on Capitol Hill for the unveiling of House Republicans' Women's Bill of Rights legislation, which aims to define "woman" in federal law to support other bills, such as the recently passed Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.

President Biden has vowed to veto the bill if it reaches his desk. Gaines' concerns reflect a growing debate over transgender participation in women's sports, with some arguing that it is unfair to allow transgender girls and women to compete against cisgender girls and women. The issue has become increasingly politicized, with conservatives advocating for exclusion and liberals advocating for inclusion. The debate is likely to continue as more states consider legislation.
