Despite her injuries, the victim could walk to her neighbor's house and report the incident to the authorities. Deputy Chief Halle explained that the police had information that there were rifles and pistols inside the house, and as such, they did not send the SWAT team in immediately. The incident has left the local community shaken. A resident, Kayla McClure, expressed her fear, stating, "It's scary. It's stuff you see on TV you don't really think it's going to be in your backyard."
The local house of worship, Oakhurst United Methodist Church, was used as a command center for police and, as such, had its regular Sunday service canceled. The church's pastor, Nathan Carlson, commented on the incident: "It just goes to show that this can happen anywhere — we're not immune to it. This is a nice neighborhood, it's a pretty peaceful neighborhood, but this happens anywhere."
