Italy is the most recent country to block an app based on privacy concerns.

In a recent announcement, the Italian government’s data protection agency said that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is now banned from accessing any Italian user data. The ban is temporary until the company complies with Italian privacy regulations.

The Italian government has launched an investigation into a data breach that occurred. According to Breitbart, “OpenAI was accused by the Privacy Guarantor of a lack of transparency to its users and other interested parties in terms of the data collects, and claimed that there is no legal justification for the program to sweep up massive swaths of data from the internet in order for its algorithm to be trained to mimic human responses to prompts.”

Italian regulators are also concerned about children using it. Although it’s supposed to be for people over 13 years old, there is an age verification process to ensure that children are not using it.

The Guardian says, “ChatGPT has been a sensation since its launch last November due to its ability to generate plausible-sounding responses to questions as well as creating an array of content including poems, academic essays, and summaries of lengthy documents when prompted by users.” However, that’s why many are saying that the app can be dangerous.

The temporary ban comes right after Europol warned that criminals could use the app for illegal purposes. The app can imitate specific speech styles and patterns of different groups of people, making it a prime app for those who want to run phishing scams. The agency further warns that the technology has the ability to spread propaganda and misinformation quickly.

The Guardian reports that the ban was in place just days after over 1,000 experts in artificial intelligence, researchers, and those backing the technology, called for a halt to AI development for a minimum of six months.

Growing concerns that companies like OpenAI are creating powerful AIs that are “ever more powerful digital minds that no one...can understand, predict, or reliably control.“
