The Russian detainment of a Wall Street Journal reporter has many concerns.

Over 30 news organizations signed a letter to the Russian ambassador to the U.S. demanding Russia release Evan Gershkovich.

According to CNN, “‘Gershkovich is a journalist, not a spy, and should be released immediately and without conditions,’ said the letter, spearheaded by the Committee to Protect Journalists, made public Friday.” Sky News, Bloomberg News, The Economist, the BBC, Time, and many more signed the letter.

Per CNN, “Gershkovich’s unwarranted and unjust arrest is a significant escalation in your government’s anti-press actions,” the letter said. “Russia is sending the message that journalism within your borders is criminalized and that foreign correspondents seeking to report from Russia do not enjoy the benefits of the rule of law.”

Gershkovich was imprisoned on allegations of espionage. It is the first time we’ve seen a U.S. journalist detained on accusations of spying since the Cold War. Dow Jones is the company behind the Wall Street Journal. CEO Almar Latour says that the company is working non-stop to help secure the release of the reporter.

However, the news organizations that signed the letter have not heard back from Russia. Russia claims that they were right to arrest him. According to Fox News, “On Thursday, the Russian government’s Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested Gershkovich, an American-born citizen, leveling spying allegations against him. The FSB claimed it arrested the journalist while he was ‘trying to obtain secret information on the activities of one of ‘the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.’”

Global outrage and demands to release him continue while Russia continues to stand by its statements and accusations that he was trying to get classified information. A new law in Russia gives reporters 15 years for such a crime. However, prisoner swaps, while not ideal, are an option with potential implications, such as encouraging more false arrests and kidnappings by other countries.

Brit Hume, Fox News senior political analyst, told Fox News Digital, “It’s looking like the Cold War is on again between the U.S., Russia, and also China.”
