In a rare moment of bi-partisanship, it might be possible to get something done in Washington related to the issue of regulating the latest artificial intelligence (AI) technologies hitting the market.

Fox News reports that indications from Congress are pointing toward some potential regulation of these technologies moving forward.

Sen. Mike Rounds spoke with Fox News Digital. He said, “I think [what] you have to do [is] to identify what is not allowed in terms of ethics and illegal activities, whether it is AI or not – you impose on AI activities the same level of ethics and privacy that you do for other competencies today.”

Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Chair Gary Peters also spoke with Fox News Digital and stated that there were already some committee meetings in which they discussed the pros and cons of AI.

“I intend to have a series of hearings in Homeland Security and Government Affairs taking up AI and what we should be thinking about,” said Peters.

This news comes as a letter signed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and other significant names in the tech industry called for a six-month pause on new AI technologies. They cited a “profound risk to society and humanity” related to the created tools.

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., sent a letter to tech companies asking them to consider the safety concerns related to the AI-related tools they and their companies are currently putting out. He wanted to point out concerns about exposure to children of some of these technologies and how they can potentially adapt to this kind of thing when it comes to the ability of the technology companies and others to adapt.

Senator Bennet said: “I think we do have a role to play,” and “In the long run, I think what we could do is set up, you know, an agency here. They can negotiate on behalf of the American people, so we can [actually have a negotiation] about privacy.” He continued stressing the importance of tech to police itself.”

Politicians of both parties are concerned about the explosion of AI technologies, and many in the technology space are also concerned. Therefore, it is understandable and fair to say that some in the tech industry might take a moment to step back and pause.
