According to a new poll released Wednesday by Fox News, former President Donald Trump has significantly widened his lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 GOP primary race.

54 percent of Americans indicated they would vote for Trump, while 24 percent said they would vote for DeSantis. This represents a significant increase for Trump since February, when his lead was 43 percent. Among the other candidates and potential candidates, no one reached the double digits. Mike Pence received 6 percent and Liz Cheney and Nikki Haley both received 3 percent.

The poll also found that Trump has gained voters among almost every key demographic except White men with college degrees, where DeSantis is up by 12 points. Among those who voted for Trump in 2020, 60 percent said they would support him again in the 2024 GOP primary, 25 percent said they would vote for DeSantis and 5 percent said they would vote for Pence.

Commenting on the results, Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who surveyed with Democrat Chris Anderson, suggested that the rumor of Trump facing indictment by the district attorney in Manhattan has helped his support among Republican primary voters. "They view the case as politically motivated and it reanimates feelings that Trump is still fighting forces they see as corrupt and out of control," Shaw said.

Additionally, the poll found that a slight majority, 52 percent, of Democrats would like to see someone other than Joe Biden as the party’s nominee for the presidential election, down one point from February. 44 percent said they wanted to see Biden as the nominee, up from 37 percent in February.

RealClearPolitics’ average of polls places Trump at a 16.8 percent lead over DeSantis, with Trump receiving 45.7 percent of the support, while DeSantis received 28.9 percent. In response, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the poll results were bad news for DeSantis and his RINO Globalist Donors, due to his votes against Social Security and Medicare, as well as the job he did as President of the United States.

The poll ran from March 24-27 and included 1,007 individuals. It has a 3 point margin of error for all registered voters.
