Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is set to return to the Senate the week of April 17 after receiving treatment for clinical depression.

Fetterman had suffered a near-fatal stroke during his campaign in 2022, which had left him with an auditory processing disorder, making it difficult for him to process spoken words quickly. His office reported that he had suffered from depression "off and on throughout his life," and his withdrawal from eating and talking before entering the hospital was a sign that he needed help. The senator served for six weeks before he checked himself in for treatment. He has been getting daily briefings, according to his staff.

Medical professionals have noted that post-stroke depression is common, affecting one in three stroke patients. His colleagues in the Senate have supported his leave of absence, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., saying at a news conference last week, "We want to give him the space to recuperate. He needs it, it’s fair, it’s right." Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., spoke with Fetterman's staff, who confirmed that the senator was progressing.

"I’m just happy he’s getting the time that he needs, and most people understand that these things don’t occur over two or three weeks, it takes a little longer," Casey said, according to The Associated Press.
