The Heart Smart Sports Coalition has been established to tackle sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) deaths in high school students, with its official launch press conference held on March 27, 2023.

The coalition of the nation's major sports leagues and medical advocacy institutions seeks to have all 50 states implement evidence-based policies to reduce SCA-related deaths. In support of this mission, the NFL Foundation has committed over $1 million in grants to provide CPR education and AED access and partner with public and private nonprofits to promote CPR training, especially among youth and student-athletes.

At the launch press conference, Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs, and Policy, noted that there are up to 23,000 Sudden Cardiac Arrests in the U.S. each year for those aged 18 and younger, and 40 percent occur during physical activity. "The simple goal of this effort is to save lives," he said. "These common-sense policies are simple, proven steps that are critical for student-athlete safety. Schools in every state should have policies in place to deliver CPR effectively, have immediate access to an AED, and know what to do in case of an emergency. Student-athletes deserve it.”

Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for each high school athletic venue that are widely distributed, posted, rehearsed, and updated annually; Clearly marked automated external defibrillator (AEDs) at each athletic venue or within 1-3 minutes of each venue where high school practices or competitions are held; and, CPR and AED education for coaches.

Only seven states have implemented all three policies, while 12 states have none. The coalition has sent letters to the governors of 43 states where additional policies are needed and is dedicated to a sustained campaign that encourages policymakers and stakeholders to adopt them within the next three years.

The mainstream media and government have finally taken notice of the alarming rise in heart attack deaths among children and adults but are yet to identify the cause. The Smart Heart Sports Coalition has taken on the challenge to reduce the number of these preventable tragedies, and its collaborative effort between the nation's major sports leagues and medical advocacy institutions is a step in the right direction. With the NFL Foundation's commitment of over $1 million in grants, the coalition is fighting to adopt policies to ensure student-athlete safety and deliver CPR effectively in all 50 states.
