As the Florida House of Representatives ratified a state takeover of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the board appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to oversee Disney World appears to be headed for a legal battle with the corporate giant.

On the same day that the House passed the legislation, the former Disney board transferred most of its powers to Disney for the next 30 years, as evidenced by developer agreements signed into effect. According to DeSantis' office, the Governor was unaware of these contracts before he approved the new district.

"An initial review suggests these agreements may have significant legal infirmities that would render the contracts void as a matter of law," said Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for the governor's office. As a result, the newly appointed board has retained multiple financial and legal firms to investigate Disney's past behavior. Brian Aungst Jr., one of the board members, expressed his dissent, saying, “I can’t think of a more naked attempt to circumvent the will of the voters and the will of the Florida Legislature and the will of the governor."

The act was discovered on Wednesday as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight Board met. Brian Aungst, a new board member, said, "I can’t think of a more naked attempt to circumvent the will of the voters and the will of the Florida Legislature and the will of the governor." He continued, "This development agreement, which in my opinion is void … was passed the same day the Florida House passed the bill creating this board, and it was done to prevent us from doing our job. That is offensive to me."

In response, Disney stated, "All agreements signed between Disney and the District were appropriate, and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida Government in the Sunshine law." To investigate any potential wrongdoings, the new board has hired two outside law firms.
