South African Police are currently on the hunt for a man who has been dubbed The Facebook Rapist.

He used the social media platform to lure women to him so that he could rape them. One person was killed. Then, he faked his death during a fire at the prison and managed to escape.

Thabo Bester was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for murder, rape, and robbery. However, in May 2022, Bester allegedly set himself on fire. Authorities reported that they found him dead. According to Global News, “‘He was discovered at about 03:35 (Tuesday) morning, where his cell was burnt, he was found on the floor,’ a Department of Correctional Services spokesperson said, as reported by the BBC at the time.”

However, now authorities report that DNA reveals the man found was not Bester. They think he died due to blunt force trauma and was then set on fire. Police have not released details on the victim found in the cell or if he was an employee at the prison.

Instead, they concentrate on finding Bester. Per Global News, “‘At this point our priority is to find this fugitive of justice and establish exactly how he faked his death,’ police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe told AFP on Monday, confirming that a new murder investigation has been opened.”

Although the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services is now asking the public for help, his alleged escape made the news long before the announcement from the Ministry. CBS News reported that an investigation by GroundUp, a local news outlet, discovered that prison guards may have helped him escape. After that, pictures of Thabo at a grocery store and accusations from many women stating he contacted them via social media surfaced.

Many claim that Bester also had a scam he ran from his cell. Global News says, “Local outlet News24 reports that Bester had posed as the head of 21st Century Media, a supposed subsidiary of America’s 21st Century Fox, and even addressed a company event from prison while pretending to be in New York.”

A murder investigation regarding the body found in the cell has been opened. There are calls for the government to take over prisons because Bester was being held in a for-profit prison, and many claim that they care more about profits, which may have had something to do with this escape. Authorities are still attempting to figure out how he managed to escape.
