According to Sanders,"Arkansas is leading the charge on filing three lawsuits against TikTok and Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram," she continued. "These actions are a long time coming. We have watched over the past decade as one social media company after another has exploited our kids for profit and escaped government oversight. My administration will not tolerate that failed status quo."
The lawsuit against Meta claims that the company puts its "growth at all costs" and has been targeting young users, rewiring their thought processes, feelings, and behaviors to the detriment of their physical and mental health. Her office added that Meta is "rewiring how our children think, feel and behave" and has participated in deceptive business practices by misleading "consumers about the addictive nature of its products."

The suit against ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is based on the abundance of posts containing mature themes, nudity, and drugs, which the company claimed were unavailable to maintain teenager-approved ratings. The final lawsuit accuses ByteDance of deceiving Arkansans by claiming their user data was safe from access by the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party.

Sanders' office described the Chinese government's exploitation of social media as "a serious challenge to American values" and a threat to the nation's security and citizens' privacy. The governor expressed her determination to ensure Big Tech companies are held accountable for their actions. "We have to hold Big Tech companies accountable for pushing addictive platforms on our kids and exposing them to a world of inappropriate, damaging content," she said.
