Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and numerous other tech leaders and artificial intelligence experts have joined forces to urge AI labs to halt the development of powerful new AI systems, citing potential risks to society.

In an open letter issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk, the signatories called for a temporary pause on the training of AI systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4. According to the lab, GPT-4 “exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks.”

The letter states that the AI developers should pause to “jointly develop and implement a set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts.” It further calls for the creation of AI governance systems and warns that no one can control the powerful tools that are being developed in AI labs. The signatories mentioned the potential risks of propaganda and lies spread through AI-generated articles that look real, as well as the possibility of AI programs outperforming workers and making jobs obsolete.

Notably absent from the letter's signatories was Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. According to the European Union's transparency register, the Future of Life Institute is primarily funded by the Musk Foundation, as well as the London-based effective altruism group Founders Pledge and Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Musk, whose electric car company Tesla uses AI for its autopilot system, has previously voiced his concerns related to the rapid development of AI. The release of OpenAI's ChatGPT has prompted competitors to accelerate the development of similar large language models and companies to integrate generative AI models into their products.

As tech giants and AI experts unite to advocate for safety protocols and ethical guidelines to be put in place to guide the future of AI systems, the open letter serves as a powerful reminder of the potential risks that these technologies can pose. This call for a pause on the development of powerful new AI systems serves as a reminder of the need for stricter oversight and regulation of advanced AI technologies.
