On Saturday, an alleged attack on a staffer of Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) shook the nation’s capital.

Glynn Neal, the suspect arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department linked to an “Assault with Intent to Kill (Knife),” was released from a 12-year prison sentence just one day prior. Reports suggest Neal approached Phillip Todd, Paul’s staffer, on a street in Washington, D.C., before stabbing him and causing “life-threatening injuries,” according to Senator Paul’s office.

Neal was found guilty and served his sentence starting in 2011 for “compelling an individual to live a life of prostitution without his or her consent” and “threat to kidnap to injure a person,” according to Fox 5.

In response, Senator Paul released this statement "This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C. I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions. We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time we would ask for privacy so everyone can focus on healing and recovery.”

The Washington DC Council was trying to approve a law to reduce penalties for violent crimes. Congress with Joe Biden denied that attempt. Although the city has seen a 3% decline in assaults with a dangerous weapon, over the past year, sexual abuse, motor vehicle theft, arson, and the homicide rate have all risen significantly in the last year by about 19%, and an overall 23% increase in crime.
