The implementation of a new law in Massachusetts providing driver's licenses to potentially 85,000 illegal aliens living in the state is set to cost taxpayers nearly $30 million, Governor Maura Healey (D) has revealed.

Last year, the state joined several others in passing the legislation, with former Governor Charlie Baker (R) attempting to veto the bill but being overruled by the Democrat-controlled legislature.

One of the driving forces behind the new law was the case of Everton Candido, a 19-year-old illegal alien arrested for the alleged killing of 77-year-old Walter Wishoski Jr., a veteran of the Army National Guard born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts. Candido had been driving without a license at the time of the fatal crash, which was a major factor in the debate for the legislation.

While initially estimated to cost less than $10 million to implement, Healey's office now believes the actual cost could reach nearly $30 million. The budget memo from the office stated, "In support of this new law, H.1 adds $28 million in funding to expand service hours at select RMV locations ... new applicants will pay the standard transaction fees at the Registry, bringing in additional revenue that will largely offset these implementation costs."

The open borders lobby believes that making driver's licenses available will ultimately help illegal aliens who find themselves in the crosshairs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In Fiscal Year 2022, states scored more than 17,500 drunk driving convictions for illegal aliens who were later arrested by ICE agents, with another 11,500 traffic offense convictions also settled against illegal aliens turned over to ICE.

Today, it is estimated that nearly 300,000 illegal aliens live in Massachusetts, with the new driver's license law providing them with an important sense of security and legitimacy.
