On Sunday night, a 70-car Canadian Pacific train derailed in North Dakota, leaving 31 cars overturned and leaking petroleum.

According to local reports, the incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near Wyndmere, Richland County, spilling materials used to make asphalt. To clean up the site, crews will allow the spilled materials to solidify in the cold weather, transforming it into a gel. Richland County Sheriff's Office reported that roads 158 and 159 Avenue Southeast will be closed between Highway 13 and 14 while the cleanup process is estimated to last seven to ten days.

This is the latest of several train derailments across the United States this month, including one in East Palestine, Ohio, in early February that caused hazardous materials to spill and forced evacuations of local residents. In a separate incident, two cars of a Canadian Pacific train derailed in a Chicago suburb on Sunday, with one car carrying wheat and the other being empty. In Massachusetts, five other freight train cars derailed on Thursday, although no hazardous materials were being hauled, nor any reported injuries.

The Associated Press reported on these incidents, underscoring the importance of adhering to stringent safety protocols to ensure the safety of both passengers and personnel. As railroads remain a central part of the transportation system in the United States, it is essential to maintain a close watch on their operations to prevent future derailments like these.
