A shoplifter punched him in the face, so the employee fired one shot after another at them. Several shots were fired when the shoplifter was already lying on the ground.
Fox News reports, “Kevin Salas Madrid, 24, confronted the serial shoplifter and told him to leave the store, at which point the shoplifter punched him in the face, which knocked off Madrid’s eyeglasses, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.”
According to a statement from police, Madrid admits he made a horrible decision that night. Another employee was with Kevin at the store that night. They said he fired up to fifteen shots at the shoplifter. After the horrifying incident, they said he couldn’t control his temper.

The shoplifter is in critical condition at the hospital as he fights for his life. No other statements have been released regarding Madrid aside from him saying it was the worst decision of his life. News outlets reached out to Family Dollar, but they have yet to respond for comment.

I used to be under the management umbrella at Dollar General. Family Dollar and Dollar General have similar policies when it comes to shoplifting. We all know that shoplifting hurts stores and is wrong. However, procedures are in place to help protect the staff, and we were all taught them upon hiring. This drastically goes outside of anything that I was taught. Madrid couldn’t control his anger and did not care about company policy.

Madrid stated that he wasn’t sure if the other person had any weapons. While he did punch Madrid in the face, I cannot find a single story or video that says the shoplifter had a weapon. He deserves to face a judge for his crimes, but did he deserve to die?
