The islands in the South China Sea and the sea itself are considered disputed territories.

As with many things, China claims ownership. However, just because China says that something is part of China doesn’t always make it so. When a United States warship was discovered in the disputed territory, China claimed they chased it off. The United States says that those claims are untrue.

The USS Milius is a guided missile destroyer by the Paracel Islands. The Chinese occupy these islands. However, both Vietnam and Taiwan also claim them.

According to Fox News, “‘USS Milius was conducting routine operations in the South China Sea and was not expelled,’ Lt. j.g. Luka Bakic said Thursday. ‘The United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.’”

That’s not the tale that the Chinese are telling. Per Fox News, “China South Command spokesman Col. Tian Junli previously claimed that the USS Milius ‘illegally entered China’s Xisha territorial waters without approval from the Chinese government, undermining peace and stability in the South China Sea.’” The spokesperson said the Chinese would remain on high alert to keep peace in the South China Sea and protect the nation.

China grabbing up land in the area and the military presence of both countries in the region has been a source of tension between the two countries. On Wednesday, China won a bid to upgrade an international port in the Solomon Islands. However, the United States, Australia, and Japan have already voiced concerns about the Chinese military bases in the area.

These concerns have resulted in the United States bolstering its military presence. The Philippines gave America access to four other military bases, increasing the American presence in the area.
