Michael Cohen, former lawyer to President Donald Trump, has been revealed to have lied to federal election officials in 2018 regarding his payment of $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels, according to a letter obtained by The Post on Wednesday.

This letter comes as Cohen is set to become a key witness in the unprecedented criminal case against his ex-boss. In his letter to the Federal Election Commission, Cohen asserted that he had used his own personal funds to pay Daniels and that neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was involved in the transaction.

However, less than six months later, Cohen pleaded guilty to a laundry list of federal crimes and admitted to using a shell company to pay Daniels and seeking reimbursement from the Trump Organization. Trump has denied the allegation of an affair with Daniels.

Cohen admitted to using a shell company to pay Daniels and asked for that money back from the Trump Organization. Cohen billed the Trump organization for a total of $420,000, double the pay for tax purposes, plus additional $50,000 for tech work and the wiring fee. Cohen also pleaded guilty for lying to Congress when he denied his efforts to broker a deal for the Trump Tower in Moscow. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison, with the overseeing judge saying, “as a lawyer, Mr. Cohen should have known better.”

Former Brooklyn prosecutor Julie Rendelman commented on the letter, saying it could help Trump's defense if he faces prosecution by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Michael Bachner, another former Manhattan prosecutor, highlighted the issue of Cohen's credibility, calling him a "star witness" with "an enormous amount of baggage." Bragg's office did not comment on the matter, while Cohen's lawyer Stephen Ryan stated that he no longer represented Cohen and refused to discuss the 2018 letter, citing attorney-client privilege.

The grand jury hearing evidence against Trump was unexpectedly postponed by Bragg on Thursday, as he had reportedly been concerned by the testimony of Trump ally Robert Costello and wanted to present a rebuttal witness. The witness is expected to testify on Thursday, sources say. This latest development further highlights the complicated nature of the case and the importance of Cohen's testimony.
