Buster Murdaugh, the eldest son of Alex Murdaugh, has broken his silence on the rumors surrounding the 2015 death of his high school classmate, Stephen Smith.

In a statement released through his family's attorney, Jim Griffin, on Monday, Buster denied any involvement in Smith's death, describing the rumors as "baseless." He explained his silence on the matter, citing the need to grieve the loss of his mother and brother and the media attention and harassment he had endured due to the false accusations.

The 19-year-old Smith was killed in a hit-and-run incident that occurred just miles from the Murdaughs' Islandton, South Carolina, hunting property, Moselle. It was at this property that Alex Murdaugh had fatally shot his wife and youngest son on June 7, 2021.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has since reopened an investigation into Smith's death, with the Smith family being represented by Eric Bland, the attorney for the children of the Murdaughs' late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield. Bland had told Fox & Friends co-host Pete Hegseth that there had been no broken glass or car parts found on the scene and that Smith had sustained a head trauma injury that was not consistent with a car accident.

Smith’s mother announced that she has raised the funds required for exhuming the body.

The renewed interest in Smith's death is due to the recent conviction of Alex Murdaugh in the murders of his wife and youngest son. Prosecutors allege he killed them to divert attention from his alleged financial crimes.

Buster Murdaugh's statement is yet another chapter in the ongoing saga surrounding the Murdaughs, with this denial of involvement in Smith's death only adding to the mystery surrounding the tragedy.
