Former Navy pilot Ryan Graves has urged Congress to investigate the phenomena of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), or UFOs, in the skies above the United States.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Graves drew on his experiences in the Navy, where he spent 11 years flying F-18s and working as a flight instructor. Despite encountering the phenomenon multiple times, he has yet to receive a definitive answer about what he and others in his squadron have witnessed.

Graves described how UAPs first appeared as "contacts on our radar, contacts on our camera system" before eventually being seen by the naked eye. He recounted an incident where "two aircraft from my squadron were flying side by side and one of these objects went right between their aircraft". The object was described as a "dark gray or black cube inside of a clear sphere".

"These were no mere balloons. The unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) accelerated at speeds up to Mach 1, the speed of sound. They could hold their position, appearing motionless, despite Category 4 hurricane-force winds of 120 knots. They did not have any visible means of lift, control surfaces or propulsion — in other words nothing that resembled normal aircraft with wings, flaps or engines."

The former pilot emphasized the importance of a "first principles" approach to understanding the issue, calling on people to separate the unknown from preconceived ideas like a "UFO or ET hypothesis.” Graves highlighted the need for "agnostic" analysis and reporting, free from the influence of conspiracy theories and sensationalism.

Graves went on to detail the behavior of the UAPs, describing how they were strangely stationary yet capable of moving at extremely high speeds. He noted that there were two primary explanations for the phenomena; they could be either an adversarial platform, a matter of national security, or a matter of scientific inquiry and curiosity.

For Graves, the issue of UAPs is critical to national security. He called on government agencies to share their information and break down their separate silos, as it is only by doing so that progress can be made. The media coverage of UAP and UFO incidents still leaves a lot to be desired, according to Graves, who highlighted the reluctance of pilots to speak out due to safety concerns.

The issue of UAPs is a matter of national importance that requires serious consideration and investigation. While it is important to approach the subject with an open mind, it is equally vital to maintain a journalistic approach free from sensationalism and speculation. The behavior of UAPs, as described by Graves, warrants further scientific inquiry and exploration to better understand this mysterious phenomenon.
