A third-party option for President in 2024 has won ballot access in three states, raising concerns among Democrats that it could act as a "spoiler" to hand the presidency to Republicans.

No Labels, a group claiming to offer voters a non-extreme presidential option next year, has qualified to appear on the 2024 presidential election ballots in Colorado, Arizona, and Oregon. Critics have called the move an outright assault to hurt President Biden's re-election chances.

According to a memo from the think tank Third Way, the group's efforts to field a spoiler could lead to the re-election of Donald Trump or a Trump-like Republican. The warning memo argued that third-party candidates have no chance of winning a general election and would mostly pick up voters who otherwise would vote for the Democratic candidate.

Third-party candidates have not attracted significant support in the presidential elections. Pointing to former presidential candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson, Third Way argued that history shows when third-party candidates make it to the November election, it only helps Republicans.

No Labels insists its "unity ticket" would draw support "equally" from Republican and Democratic-leaning voters. The proposed path to victory would secure electoral votes from purple and swing states nationwide. Responding to criticism, No Labels tweeted that "no one" with the organization has "any interest in fueling a spoiler effort."

The group's policy playbook includes policies attractive to Republicans and some Democrats. The "Policy Playbook For America’s Next President," released in 2016, lays out reforms to simplify the tax code, secure energy independence by 2024, balance the budget by 2030 and reduce regulations – all generally favorable to GOP lawmakers except for a few problematic issues such as a pathway to citizenship to illegal immigrants with a stronger border control policy in place.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) said in a statement on Tuesday that the No Labels Party surpassed the minimum requirement for signatures to be placed on a ballot and has qualified as a party for federal, statewide, and legislative races in the 2024 primaries and general elections in the state.

No Labels said on its website that the unity ticket would be an "insurance plan" if Democrats and Republicans chose "unreasonably divisive" presidential nominees. It said it would not put forward its candidate but make sure a "launching pad" exists for a third-party candidate if both the Democratic and Republican candidates are not appealing.

Early polling of hypothetical three-person matchups with Rep. Reuben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I), and a Republican candidate have shown Gallego leading by several points. Politico reported that a national Democratic strategist said party operatives are feeling "agita" about the potential effect of No Labels. No Labels told Politico that its polling has shown that its ticket would gather support from both parties equally. It said it would not put forward its own candidate but ensure a "launching pad" exists for a third-party candidate if the Democratic and Republican candidates are not appealing.
