The southwestern city of Nogales, located on the Arizona-Mexico border, has become a major hub for Fentanyl smuggling from Mexico.

Federal agents have recently discovered the deadly drug concealed in various parts of vehicles attempting to enter the U.S. through Nogales.

According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), over six tons of the potent synthetic opioid were seized at the Nogales port of entry between October 2022 and January 2023. A federal law enforcement official attributed the increased trafficking to the growing demand for Fentanyl and its ease of production.

Mexican drug cartels are reportedly responsible for the influx of Fentanyl into Nogales. A CBP officer recently found approximately 219,000 Fentanyl pills hidden in all four vehicle tires. In comparison, another officer discovered 343,600 pills hidden in the doors, dashboard, firewall, and cargo area of another vehicle.

Nogales boasts two vehicle crossings that can handle 29 lanes for passenger and commercial traffic. The Deconcini crossing, open 24/7, has experienced the most busts. The CBP's website currently shows wait times of up to two hours for passenger vehicles at both Deconcini and the larger Mariposa crossing.

Due to the heavy traffic and volume of vehicles at Nogales, smugglers find it challenging to detect Fentanyl in the vast traffic. The federal source stated, "It’s tough to detect when it’s a needle in a haystack."

Fentanyl abuse has become a significant public health concern in the United States, with overdose deaths related to the drug increasing sharply in recent years. As the CBP continues to crack down on Fentanyl smuggling, it remains to be seen whether this will have any significant impact on the flow of the drug into the U.S..
