During a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Thursday, FBI Director Christopher Wray was grilled by House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (D-NY) about the agency's compliance with requests from the House Judiciary Committee.

Stefanik, who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, emphasized that Wray is accountable to Congress and the American people, and complying with oversight requests is the "bare minimum" required of him.

Stefanik chastised Wray for failing to provide a witness for a Judiciary Committee hearing and asked him to commit to providing one before the next hearing on March 28. Wray deflected the question, saying the FBI would be "happy to work with her," but Stefanik pressed him for a commitment. After repeatedly failing to agree to provide a witness, Wray finally responded with a "yes."

Stefanik then asked Wray about the Hunter Biden laptop and the FBI's reported effort to cast it as "Russian disinformation." Wray refused to answer, claiming an "ongoing investigation." Stefanik reminded Wray that they have an ongoing investigation into the FBI's actions, and his "stonewalling" was unacceptable. She emphasized that the American people deserve answers.

“Were you aware that the FBI had Hunter Biden’s laptop since December 2019?” she asked. “I can’t speak to exactly when we had a laptop available,” Wray responded, avoiding a simple question. “And we have an ongoing investigation as well,” Stefanik replied.

Stefanik also probed Wray about the raid against former President Donald Trump, but Wray refused to answer questions about internal discussions between the FBI and the Department of Justice. “Even though it’s been reported in the Washington Post? Stefanik asked. “There’s lots of things reported in the media,” Wray avoided answering again. “I know — it leaked from your agency,” Stefanik responded.

Overall, Stefanik's questioning of Wray highlighted the need for accountability and transparency from the FBI. As she emphasized, "These folks think that we serve them, as opposed to the fact that they work for us." The American people deserve answers, and it is crucial that the FBI complies with oversight requests and provides transparency into its actions.
