You might want to keep your calendar open for Valentine’s Day in 2046, not for a date, but perhaps to watch the significant destruction of some part of Earth.

It may not sound romantic, but maybe you won’t have to worry about picking up those Valentine’s Day gifts in 23 years. This recommendation is based on the latest NASA projection that a significant asteroid could strike the Earth on that day in 2046.

LADBible reports that on March 1, NASA put the odds of a direct strike by the asteroid was just 1 in 12,000. However, they updated that projection just a few days later to say that the odds are about 1 in 710. That might seem like long odds, but that is pretty terrifying when you think about the odds of a significant asteroid striking the Earth on any given day.

The asteroid has been named Cheryl by NASA scientists, and they say that exactly where it could hit on the Earth remains unclear. The potential impact zone stretches from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean and large portions of the United States. In other words, it could land almost anywhere on Earth.

NASA said the following in an online statement about the situation:

“Orbit analysts will continue to monitor asteroid 2023 DW and update predictions as more data comes in.”

LADBible reports that if the asteroid impacts Earth, it could create significant damage that would rival some of the most damaging asteroid strikes that have ever hit the planet.

Right now, NASA still labels this asteroid as causing “no need for public concern.” However, it is always shocking and stunning when NASA reveals that there is a real possibility that an asteroid could strike the Earth directly. It is something that always gets people at least a little nervous.
